Precision Engineering Consortium Associate Director
Dr. Buckner joined the faculty at NCSU in August of 1999. His research focuses on intelligent system identification and control, with applications to electromechanical systems. Intelligent systems are extensions of adaptive systems that retain and generalize adaptive information for improved future performance. Current research projects include intelligent control algorithms for magnetic bearing spindles and magnetically levitated flywheel rotors, micro-robotics for surgical applications, and development of advanced electromechanical actuators. Dr. Buckner has developed a graduate course offered jointly in the MAE and ECE departments (Design of Electromechanical Systems) and teaches undergraduate courses in Automatic Controls and Dynamics.
Prior to his appointment at NCSU, Dr. Buckner was a research engineer at the University of Texas Center for Electromechanics in Austin, TX. Dr. Buckner is a recipient of the NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, the ASEE Southeast Region New Faculty Research Award, and the NCSU Outstanding Teacher Award.
